Last week we posted a story on how athletes are continuing to get behind the effort to help the earthquake-devastated Caribbean nation of Haiti. We want to cover a few of the many more reports.
The support pouring in is “overwhelming,” said Alonzo Mourning and Heat star Dwyane Wade who co-founded Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti. The pledge total has surpassed $800, 000, as of January 18.
Wade’s donation was $175, 000—-a one-game salary. Others, including Mourning, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul each pledged $100, 000. At least 17 other NBA players and 27 professional athletes made donations.
NFL players Randy Moss, Clinton Portis, Terrell Owens and Michael Vick are also donating and finding ways to engage fans. Josh Cribbs, Wes Welker, and Donte Stallworth are using Twitter to challenge those participating. Stallworth pledged $1 for each person following him—- $34, 000 so far.
Mourning, who has made several humanitarian trips, said, ” It is the most devastating, deplorable image I’ve ever seen. We can only pray and do the best we can to help.”
The Wasserman Media Group is a global sports and entertainment company consulting and representing athletes. This group has developed a program to join forces between its professional basketball roster of 47 players and the Wasserman Foundation to raise and donate at least $500, 000 to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund ( CBHF). Fans are encouraged to visit the CBHF at www.clintonbushhaitifund.org to contribute. One hundred percent of donations made to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund go directly to relief efforts.
South Dakota State basketball coach Scott Nagy has a personal interest in the Haiti relief efforts. His adopted daughter is from a city near the quake’s epicenter.
To help raise awareness, money and shoes, Nagy coached barefoot last Saturday night. He remarks that it’s a minor inconvenience, but “it’s a good way to remind people that there are other things going on that are a heck of a lot more important than just basketball games.”
The donations gathered will be directed to Samaritan’s Feet, an organization which has had operations in Haiti for more than four years.
Scott has encouraged fans to text “shoes” to 85944 so $5 can be added to each person’s cellphone bill to buy a pair of shoes for a child in need.
We can all join these efforts and be part of the movement to help give hope to the people of Haiti.
