It’s got to be a first in NFL annals. Three of the first four playoff games this week will be rematches of this past Sunday’s Week 17 regular season schedule, and two will be at the same sites.
In the NFC, nothing will be different. Philadelphia will play in Dallas and Green Bay is at Arizona.
The Eagles were blown out by the host Cowboys, 24-0 in the East Division decider, having possession of the ball for less than 20 of the 60 minutes. Philadelphia managed only 46 plays and ran the ball just 10 times. Although they each wound up with 11 and 5 records, Dallas annexed the division by winning both games against Philadelphia, and is the number 3 seed in the NFC. The Eagles dropped from the number 2 seed to number 6 with the defeat.
Fresh from a 33-7 smacking of the Cardinals, the number 5 seeded Packers are right back in the same stadium to challenge the number 4 seed. Arizona played Kurt Warner for one quarter and rested many of its starters on Sunday.
Number 1 New Orleans and number 2 Minnesota earned first round byes and have the week off.
As for the AFC, the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens won their final regular season affairs, and that is all they needed to do to clinch postseason spots.
Number 4 seed Cincinnati will square off against number 5 seed New York for the second week in a row, but this time in Ohio, not Giants Stadium.
The Bengals could have saved jet fuel costs and hotel expenses by staying home over the weekend. Their performance in New York may well have been the most pathetic showing of any playoff-bound team in the history of the National Football League.
CINCINNATI CALAMITIES:
Took three offensive snaps in the first quarter to the Jets’ 27.
Gained ONE yard in the opening period.
After nearly 24 minutes, had run only 11 plays for a MINUS two yards and trailed 17-0.
ONLY first down of the half came on a penalty in the second quarter.
Jets were ahead, 27-0 at intermission with 16 first downs and 250 yards.
The Bengals gained 7 yards in the first half on 15 plays, thanks to a 9-yard run by Larry Johnson.
Carson Palmer was 1 for 11 passing for NO yards at halftime and had a rating of 1.7.
The final score was 37-0, and the Bengals finished with NO passing yards in the 60 minutes.
New England is the number 3 seed in the AFC based on better strength of victory than Cincinnati, 72-88 to 70-90. Both won 10 games. The Patriots will entertain the Ravens, who are the number 6 seed.
Houston, defending Super Bowl champ Pittsburgh, Denver, Miami, and Jacksonville were all eliminated from playoff contention on the final day. The Dolphins have no playoff wins in the last nine years.
Number 1 seed Indianapolis and second-seeded San Diego can rest this week after earning byes.
A few weeks ago, we were talking about the possibility of having two NFL teams complete the regular season undefeated. The Colts won their initial 14 games while the Saints were once 13 & 0. Talk about a complete reversal of form. Each club struggled down the stretch, not only losing but resting starters. The result was that in Week 17, New Orleans was a 10-point underdog at Carolina and Indianapolis was an 8-point underdog in Buffalo. They both got beat.
The outcry over pro teams putting their regulars on the bench in late-season games forced NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to address the subject over the weekend. The league’s position has been that playoff-bound squads have the right to rest their starters in the closing regular season encounters. But, Goodell said his circuit was sensitive to criticism of the Colts’ using backup players after clinching home-field advantage, and will consider offering incentives to such teams, perhaps awarding draft choices. The commissioner said he did not blame Indianapolis, but wanted every game to be competitive.
NBC football analyst and former Bengals receiver Cris Collinsworth was asked by the New York Post what he thought of the Colts benching their starters for most of the second half against the Jets in their first setback. Collinsworth said, “I would have lost my mind if I were a player on a team that had a chance to be considered the greatest football team of all time and not to be given that opportunity. It would have driven me absolutely crazy. They probably would have had to tie me to the bench to keep me from running back out there. It goes against the very nature of a player. I think it’s going to be a bit of a negative distraction for them going forward.”
To intensify the debate over the subject of resting or not resting players, the Patriots lost their leading receiver Wes Welker to a knee injury Sunday which will sideline him in the playoffs. New England did not have to win in Houston to reach the postseason. As Doug Farrar said in his blog, Shutdown Corner, “The NFL has gone as far as considering giving compensatory draft picks to those teams who keep their stars in the games, though I’m sure it will be tough to convince Bill Belichick that an extra third-rounder would be worth watching his leading receiver possibly lose the rest of his season. And good luck getting any member of the Competition Committee to change the current rules with the Welker injury fresh in their minds.”
All teams played on the final day of the professional football regular season, and 14 of the 16 favorites enjoyed the fruits of victory.

Looking at the results of the 30 bowl games played so far, the major conferences have not dominated at all. Most football observers think the Southeastern Conference is the strongest league in the land, but it is barely over .500 at the moment, the Big Ten is break-even, and the Pac 10 has taken its lumps.

When unbeatens Alabama and Texas collide for the national championship Thursday evening in Pasadena shortly after 5 PM, Pacific time, the Crimson Tide will be out to embellish the SEC’s glossy record in recent BCS title showdowns.

For the fourth straight year, the Sugar Bowl had a bad game. The streak began with LSU-Notre Dame, continued with Georgia-Hawaii and Utah-Alabama, and now the mismatch between Florida and Cincinnati. The Gators built a 23-0 cushion midway through the second quarter, and had 17 first downs to one for the Bearcats, and 265 yards to 10 for Cincinnati. Tim Tebow completed his first 12 passes and 16 of 17 for 213 yards and two TDS. Florida had not punted by then. Urban Meyer’s offensive unit amassed 660 yards, averaging over nine yards for 70 plays. Tebow bowed out with a sensational 31 for 36 and 484 yards. A good season for Cincy, but not ready for prime time.
Ohio State’s recent lack of success in bowl games has been blamed by some on too long a layoff after the regular season. The Buckeyes debunked that theory by controlling the first quarter of the Rose Bowl against Oregon and jumping ahead, 10-0. Behind briefly at 17-16, the Big Ten champs were impressive in rallying.
Have never met him, but Ohio State coach Jim Tressel comes across as a gentleman. It’s hard to believe the Bucks had not played in the previous dozen Rose Bowls, but they had participated in 11 other bowls during that span—winning five. The Big Ten had lost the past six Rose Bowls in which it played, and also its last half dozen BCS bowl contests.
I love officials’ replay in football. Oregon got a deserved touchdown in Pasadena because of it. All that matters is to get the play right. Don’t mind waiting.
It was wonderful to see 80-year-old Bobby Bowden go out with his 389th career victory as Florida State whipped West Virginia in the Gator Bowl. Bowden has five fewer victories than Penn State’s 83-year-old Joe Paterno who will continue. Bobby said, ” I sure wanted to win 400. Dad gum it, I wish they could count my 22 wins at South Georgia College.” He lost only 129, and finished with 33 consecutive winning seasons. Bowden was a coach for 57 years, a head coach for 41, and had only two losing records. He’s the only major college coach to win 10 or more games for 14 straight seasons. To me, his best accomplishment was to have the Seminoles in the Top 5 of the two major polls at the conclusion of 14 straight seasons. (1987-2000) Now, that is hard to do.
I was proud of my Sooners for holding Stanford to three points in the second half of their Sun Bowl conquest. Glad a bad call on what should have been interfering with a punt returner didn’t cost Oklahoma the game. That returner, Ryan Broyles, had a sensational afternoon with a school record 13 pass receptions. Toby Gerhart of Stanford was my favorite running back this season.
Unless you are a Michigan State fan, didn’t you feel happy for Ruffin McNeill, the interim coach of Texas Tech, when the Red Raiders won a shootout at the Alamo Bowl? A difficult spot he was in after the firing of Mike Leach, and how about his two gutsy decisions to go for it on fourth down in clutch time, and his kids coming through to sew up a 41-31 success. “Ruff” has been the defensive coordinator in Lubbock, and they are not known for playing much defense. He would be a popular choice with the players.
The ugliest bowl game I have ever seen was the Cotton Bowl. Mississippi and Oklahoma State combined for TWELVE turnovers, six of them by OSU in the final quarter of what was a 7-7 standoff with under five minutes to go. Centers were snapping the ball before the quarterbacks were ready. The quarterbacks were dropping snaps from the centers. It looked like an “Our Gang” comedy film. Either that or the players on both teams were out on the town all night and showed up in time for the kickoff. Berry Tramel of the Daily Oklahoman nailed it on the head when he wrote, “Oklahoma State turned the Cotton Bowl into the Rotten Bowl.” There was a rarity in that debacle. Both teams had a goal-line stand, stopping the opponent inside the one-yard line. When is the last time you saw that happen in a game? I was impressed by Ole Miss running back Dexter McCluster.
Don’t be surprised if the Cotton Bowl, now played in the new billion dollar Cowboys Stadium, becomes the fifth BCS site. It may be 2014 before it happens.
One baseball note………it’s looking more and more likely that Matt Holliday will return to the Cardinals.
