Give Me A Minute

Three of the four NFL playoff games over the weekend were upsets……not major shockers.
Cincinnati was a 2 1/2 point favorite while New England and Green Bay were each 3 point picks. The Bengals and Patriots bowed out at home and looked sluggish doing it. Not the Packers. They overcame a 31-10 deficit in the second half, caught the Cardinals at 45-45, won the coin toss and the football to start overtime.
Then defensive back Michael Adams of Arizona, who had been exploited all day by Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, turned from goat to hero. Adams knocked the ball loose from Rodgers, Karlos Dansby of the Cardinals grabbed it, and dashed 17 yards for the game winner.
The 96 points made it the highest scoring NFL postseason clash ever. 13 touchdowns were another record. There were 59 first downs…..1,024 yards…..only one punt by each team….just five third down plays all day for Arizona…..Green Bay stopped the Cardinals on only two possessions, and the Packers gave the ball up three times……neither team could stop the other…..Arizona scored on eight of 11 possessions, Green Bay on seven of 12……Adams’ strip of Rodgers made Neil Rackers the happiest man in the world after Rackers had missed a 34-yard field goal that would have given the Cardinals a last second victory in regulation.
The quarterbacks were phenomenal. 38-year-old Kurt Warner of Arizona had more touchdown passes (five) than incompletions (four) as he completed 29 of 33 for 379 yards with no interceptions. The five TDs equalled Warner’s career best. I didn’t realize how good Rodgers is. He hit on 28 of 42 for a Packers postseason record 422 yards and four touchdowns.
All you need to know about the other NFC playoff game between Dallas and Philadelphia is how many passing yards Donovan McNabb of the Eagles had accumulated with two minutes left in the first half Saturday night.
TWO………..two yards.
The Cowboys were ahead at that point, 24-7, and the outcome was as good as decided. Final score was 34-14, and Dallas had its first postseason triumph in 13 years.
I knew what a good baseball player Shawn Green was. One day with the Dodgers, he crushed four home runs in a game at Milwaukee, and I had the pleasure of describing three of them. On Saturday, got to see running back Shonn Greene of the Jets turn in an impressive showing in an AFC playoff battle in Cincinnati. The rookie from Iowa ran for 135 yards. New York advanced with a 24-14 win.
Baltimore jolted New England in Sunday’s AFC encounter when Ray Rice scampered 83 yards for a score on the first play of the game. The Ravens made it 14-0 less than 4 1/2 minutes in, 21-0 after 11 minutes, and 24-0 with under 14 minutes elapsed. Tom Brady had been 8 and 0 in home playoffs at Foxboro. At the end, it was 33-14.
Three of the weekend’s four losers——Cincinnati, Philadelphia and New England——all scored 14 points.

Barry Switzer, winning coach, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl 30:
“The team that wins the Super Bowl will have a hot quarterback and no injury problems.”
————————————-
Would Texas have beaten Alabama had Colt McCoy not been hurt four minutes into the game?
We will never know, but what a shame to have the national championship skirmish marred by that injury which took the luster off the showdown.
It would be like the Colts without Peyton………the Saints missing Brees…..or the Cowboys minus Romo. No freshman backup quarterback was going to lead the Longhorns to the title. You knew that wasn’t going to happen with 56 minutes still to play.
Yet, Texas wasted opportunities to take a quick 14-0 lead, and settled for merely six points.
Neither Brent Musburger nor Kirk Herbstreit commented on an early interception by Blake Gideon of Texas which was not a smart play. On its own 20, facing fourth down and 23, Alabama faked a punt and threw a pass. Gideon, instead of knocking the ball down, intercepted, and went down at the 37. That cost Texas 17 yards. Every time that happens, I wonder why players make that mistake. Does the excitement of making an interception override showing intelligence? I really believe most players do not think about their options before the situation presents itself.
On their fifth offensive play, the ‘ Horns lost McCoy for the remainder of the night with what he called a pinched nerve in his shoulder. A key question before the game was whether Texas had enough of a running game to keep Alabama off balance. The answer was ”No.” After moving to a first down at the 1, all Texas could get was a field goal for a 3-0 lead.
After recovering the ensuing kickoff at the Bama 30, Texas came up third and five at the Crimson Tide 25. Dan Buckner then dropped a pass which would have resulted in a first down, and the Longhorns had to be happy with only three points, making it 6-0.
On the second play of the second quarter, Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram’s two-yard touchdown plunge put Alabama in front for good, 7-6. It was only a 57-yard scoring drive after Texas kicked off short to keep the ball away from Javier Arenas.
A few minutes later, Alabama freshman Trent Richardson raced 49 yards for another Tide TD, and it was 14-6.
Ingram and Richardson combined for 225 yards rushing at Pasadena—–116 by Ingram—–as both backs averaged over five yards a carry. Texas led the nation in rushing defense, yielding 62 yards a game, and under two yards a carry. Meanwhile, Texas rushed for just 81 yards.
After Malcolm Williams of the Longhorns dropped a touchdown pass in the endzone, the Crimson Tide scored 10 points in the closing 33 seconds of the first half. A 26-yard field goal and a 28-yard interception of a shovel pass for a TD capped a 24-point quarter for Alabama, which took an 18-point advantage into intermission.
Texas did not score its first touchdown until the game was over 43 minutes old, then Garrett Gilbert tossed scoring passes of 44 and 28 yards to Jordan Shipley to make it 24-21. Shipley caught 10 overall.
The Longhorns’ fourth and fifth turnovers—-a fumble and an interception—–led to Alabama touchdowns in the final three minutes making it a 37-21 final as the Crimson Tide captured a national championship for the first time since 1992.
Nick Saban earned $ 200,000 for taking Alabama to the BCS finals and $ 200,000 more for winning. He’s the first coach to win national titles with two schools since the polls began in 1936. That’s four straight for the Southeastern Conference. (Florida, LSU with Saban, Florida and Alabama).
Alabama was only 2 for 12 on third down conversions——and still won.
Quarterback Greg McElroy of the Tide is 30 and 0 as a starter in highschool and college. He’ll be back next season although he graduated in three years with a 3.85 GPA. Greg had the quote of the day at the Rose Bowl when he said, “On my ring, it’s not going to say, ‘ Beat Texas without Colt. It’s going to say, ’14 and 0, National Champions.’
Is Alabama the best team in the country? Yes, I think so.

Alabama collected all 60 first place votes in the final AP rankings. Once-beaten Texas and once-defeated Florida finished second and third which surprised me. I thought Boise State, which wound up 14 and 0, might be number 2, but the sportswriters don’t like its strength of schedule.
TCU and Cincinnati lost bowl games and still finished sixth and eighth.
Boise State pulled the third biggest upset in the 34 bowl games. The Broncos—a 7 1/2 point underdog—–used a fake punt in the fourth quarter to down TCU, 17-10 in a duel of unbeatens at the Fiesta Bowl. Only SMU and Wyoming staged bowl surprises that were more unexpected.
Kyle Efaw, who caught the pass on the fake punt for Boise State to set up the winning touchdown, was asked if his team should be number 1 after defeating TCU. His answer: “Probably not.”

Lou Holtz says Mike Leach will have trouble getting a good college football coaching job after being fired at Texas Tech so he should try to become an NFL offensive coordinator. Ousted Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis did that a few days ago, joining the Kansas City Chiefs.
LOOKING BACK…..
What the experts forecast——
In the pre-season Associated Press poll, Florida received 58 of the 60 first place votes while number two Texas drew the other two. Oklahoma was third, USC fourth, and Alabama was considered no better than fifth.
Four magazines listed Florida as the pre-season favorite for the BCS title. Alabama was picked 6th, 7th, 8th and 13th by those publications. The Sporting News made the Crimson Tide number 13.

Biggest Strengths: Defense as a whole, WR Julio Jones
Potential Fatal Flaw: Rushing Attack
Buzz: Alabama won 12 games last season because of a strong rushing attack and a stifling defense. The stifling defense returns. But the offensive line has three new starters, a 1,000 yard running back has to be replaced and quarterback John Parker Wilson is gone. Sophomore Mark Ingram should have success at running back, and there is some talent along the offensive line.
But that talent still has to prove it can move people the way last season’s line did. If the running attack struggles, Alabama is looking at a third place finish in the SEC West.
During the just-concluded season, 17 former major college coaches ranked the top 25 teams each week in The Sporting News. Just four rated Alabama as the number 1 team in the final poll. They were Lavell Edwards, Don James, Frank Kush and Bill Mallory. 12 coaches had Florida on top, and one—-R. C. Slocum—-went for Texas.
