Ross,
What is the scoring on a dropped third strike by the catcher and the batter makes it to first base safely? Is it counted as a strikeout, but not an “out” if the batter beats the throw to first?

Ross:
It is a strikeout, Jerry, and is scored that way. There will be either a passed ball or a wild pitch charged on the play allowing the hitter to reach first base. If the batter reaches as the result of a passed ball by the catcher and eventually scores, that is an unearned run. If he gets on due to a wild pitch on a third strike, it’s an earned run because that is the pitcher’s fault.

Hi, Ross,
Just checked in on your web site after seeing your review of the Dodgers’ game in the L. A. Times. Ironically I was a page on the Guest Relations staff at NBC when you were KNBC’s sports director. I ended up doing radio/TV basketball play-by-play for 17 years for the University of Portland. I also had the opportunity to do quite a bit of NCAA D-3 football radio play-by-play. Always modeled my efforts after you and Vin; do your homework, paint a picture, never be a “homer” and always remember we’re broadcasters, just the communicators……we’re not the show. Trust you and your family are doing well.

I am glad to have found your webpage. I think it is great that the L. A. Times has given you that column to comment on the Dodgers games. Just wanted to say thank you for the many great years of baseball facts you gave the listeners over the years. Can you explain the infield fly rule, please? Just kidding.

Dear Mr. Porter,
In July of 1968 you graciously made a personal appearance at my Little League Field which is the now defunct Victory National Little League in North Hollywood. The circumstances involved a youth baseball team from Japan visiting our field. I was 12 then and can clearly remember your kindness. I’m pretty certain you were working for KNBC 4 at that time. And of course, being that I’ve been a Dodgers fan since 1962, this is my chance to tell you that I loved listening to you broadcast their games. That also includes highschool basketball games on Saturdays and UNLV games too.
Your fan,
Terry Morgan

Dear Mr. Porter,
Thank you for your astute analysis of these playoff games in the Times. As a 41-year-old lifelong Dodger fan, I grew up with you and Vin doing the broadcasts. Your insight and ability made you one of my favorite announcers.
Keep up the great work on your website, and good luck in all of your future endeavors.
You are certainly not forgotten by this Dodger fan.
