Hi, Ross,
I've been trying to find out about a sportscaster during the 1950's and 1960's named Kern Tibbs or Tipps. I really liked his play-by-play of college football on the radio. One thing I remember, a good punt was "a prodigious kick." I never looked that word up. I have loved your work.
Jeff Potter
Shawnee, Oklahoma
ROSS:
Kern Tipps was the radio voice of the Southwest Conference for 32 years, and I'm like you, Jeff, in my admiration of his colorful announcing. He was as good a college football broadcaster as I've heard. Kern had an interesting life. Born in 1905, he became sports editor of the Houston Chronicle from 1926 to 1934. Tipps got into radio in 1926 as a sportscaster, became a newscaster in 1930, and was general manager of KRPC in Houston from 1935 to 1946. He then joined an advertising agency and became a vice-president.
But, on Saturday afternoons in the fall, Kern Tipps was behind the microphone for the biggest college games in Texas, for the most part. He would describe a fumbled handoff between the quarterback and a running back as a "Malfunction at the junction." Of a quarterback sack, Kern would exclaim, "He had to peel it and eat it that time." The sponsor was Humble Oil, and his standard line was, "Go to the game with Humble."
Thanks for bringing back some fond memories. I spent many hours as a youngster in Oklahoma listening to Texas radio stations with powerful signals who carried the Humble "Game of the Week" with Kern Tipps. His folksy, exciting and accurate descriptions were always a treat. I'm sorry that I never got an opportunity to meet him.
Tipps died in 1967 at the age of 62.

Dear Lin and Ross:
Thanks so much for the stories you wrote on Bob and Mike. Congrats on your great website and your fine writing and interviews. Best to you and your family.
Wayne Bryan
LIN AND ROSS:
We appreciate your note, Wayne, and think your sons not only deserve the number 1 ranking among doubles teams in tennis, but are real sports heroes for the way they conduct themselves on and off the court. You and Kathy did a tremendous job as parents.

Hi, Ross:
American League winner? Probably the Yankees, but I will be rooting for Texas. National League winner? That's a tough call. San Diego is amazing me, Ludwick was a great pickup for them. The Reds and Atlanta are surprises. If the Phillies get healthy, they are good----still. I would pick them, I think, if healthy, to win the N. L. I'm glad football is here, college and the NFL. I hope you're doing well, and in good health. Take care, Ross.
Clyde Smith
Riverside, Ca.
ROSS:
Clyde, you and I usually agree on many sports subjects, and here we do again. The Yankees have to be the favorites in the Amercian League even though Jeter and A-Rod are having their worst offensive seasons in years, and the club has injury problems. I've also felt the Phillies are the team to beat in the National League.....if they get everyone healthy. Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt have improved their pitching staff significantly, Lidge is doing better as the closer, and the hurt regulars are starting to return to the lineup. The Braves have been awesome at home, a tremendous come-from-behind club, and would like to give retiring Bobby Cox a world title.

My thanks to Linda and Keith Alber of LaPalma, California, for their most gracious letter, and am happy they have found our website. In their words, "We have reconnected and happily reunited."

Dear Linda and Ross,
Thank you for your stories on the Bryan brothers. Yes, they are awesome. Besides being probably the best doubles team in the world, they are really nice guys. We watched them win the final in Miami a few years ago, and they hung around for a LONG time signing autographs. When people ran out of things for them to sign, they even took off their shoes, signed them, and gave them away. We got both of their autographs on our hats or some such thing.
Jay Warner
Edmond, Oklahoma
ROSS:
You're right, Jay. Their friendliness toward the fans is refreshing to see, and is one of the reasons they are so popular wherever they play. On Sunday in Toronto, Bob and Mike won their record 63rd career doubles title on the pro tour and reclaimed the World Number 1 individual doubles ranking. The Bryans are 7 and 0 in finals this season.

Ross,
I just came across your website and saw the tab to contact you. I am 33 and grew up a Dodger fan, of course with Vin, but also with you, and I want you to know how dearly you are missed. Your wonderful voice and style are sorely missed. I hope life finds you in good health and spirits. Thank you for so many wonderful memories.
Don Heffern II
ROSS:
It means a lot to me, Don, that a fan like you takes the time to write me a note almost six years after my last Dodger broadcast.
Thank you for your kindness.

Hi, Ross !
Here is the most recent reason baseball is virtually totally unpredictable. Two games between the Phillies and Dodgers in two nights.
Tuesday, August 10 24 runs
Wednesday, August 11 2 runs
For those keeping score, I prefer the 2-0 game for every player, umpire, coach, manager, and expert fans are on their toes every pitch. Plus, I prefer pitching duels.
Harry Bluebond
Los Angeles
ROSS:
You and I are in agreement, Harry. I, too, like to see a low-scoring affair compared to a poorly pitched game.

Hi Ross,
I just wanted to say it was a pleasure meeting you this past week at the UCLA tennis tournament. Thank you for all that you have done for sports and I look forward to seeing you again in the future.
All the very best.
Gary Paul
(Bob and Mike Bryan's trainer)
ROSS:
It was great to meet you, Gary, and hear how you train the Bryan brothers. Congratulations to them and to you for their record 62nd doubles championship on the pro tour. Being in top physical shape and good health has been one of the keys to their success, and you can feel pride in your contribution to helping Bob and Mike attain their goal.

Hey, Mr. Porter,
Who do you think the teams to beat are in the American League and the National League?
Sincerely,
Clyde Newman
Fresno, Ca.
ROSS:
Clyde, I think the Yankees are the best team in baseball at the moment, but the Rangers and Rays might be tough in the playoffs. I've been expecting the Phillies to get back on track and it looks like they have. The Giants could be tough down the stretch. Don't count out the Padres, Cardinals or Braves, either.

Dear Ross:
How can Tiger Woods have played such poor golf as he has recently? Will he ever return to his greatness on the course?
Lou Andrews
Columbia, Missouri
ROSS:
I think Tiger is so out of synch mentally after what has happened in his personal life, Lou, that he needs to leave the PGA Tour for the rest of the year. He can work on his golf game and try to get his head straightened out in time for 2011.
