Golf Violations

Golf Violations

Golf is a sport which is sometimes embroiled in turmoil and controversy because of disqualifications and penalties in tournaments. What is refreshing about those violations is that they are frequently self-imposed by the golfers, honoring the tradition of a game where the players police themselves. Jim Furyk, the number six player in the world, was barred from last week's first FedEx Cup playoff-----for oversleeping the day before The Barclays event started in New Jersey. [caption id="attachment_8207" align="alignnone" width="190" caption="Jim Furyk"][/caption] Furyk missed his 7:30 a.m. tee-off time in the pro-am. He set a wake-up call on his mobile phone which he uses as an alarm clock, but the power ran out during the night. Jim was five minutes late and had no way to be on the 11th tee when his group took off. The PGA tour has a strict rule regarding pros participating with amateurs the day before a tourney. Only an injury or a family emergency is acceptable as an excuse. The top 54 available players on the points list are required by the PGA Tour to compete in pro-ams of tournaments in which they have entered. The Players Championship is the only one without a pro-am. It's understandable why they have this rule. A major portion of the annual charitable proceeds come from the revenue a pro-am brings. These amateurs pay a lot of money to have the right to play 18 holes and ride in a golf cart with a professional this one day. It's five hours or more of personal contact with a sports celebrity, and that is not usually possible except in golf. Furyk said, "I've got no one to blame but myself. The rules are rules. I'm kicking myself." [caption id="attachment_8208" align="alignnone" width="176" caption="Phil Mickelson"][/caption] However, the number 2 ranked golfer in the world, Phil Mickelson, was sharply critical, calling the rule "inherently unfair." Mickelson said, "If you're going to have a rule that does not apply to everybody, because not everybody played the pro-am, you cannot have it affect the competition. It's got to be a different penalty. It's not protecting the players or the sponsors. I cannot disagree with it more. I have no idea how the commissioner let this rule go through. It's ridiculous." Over the years, there have been numerous cases where professional golfers have been penalized. The most infamous occurred in the final round of the 1968 Masters. Roberto De Vincenzo made a birdie 3 on the 17th hole, but his playing partner Tommy Aaron put down a 4. Neither man caught the mistake and when the Argentine signed his incorrect scorecard, he missed a chance to be in a playoff for the green jacket. Not using the proper golf ball has cost several tour players. In 1996, Greg Norman was using a legal ball at Hartford, but for the lack of one digit, a zero, on the balls he had used in the first two rounds, he disqualified himself. There was a different stamping on his golf ball. Attempting to qualify for the 2009 PGA tour, J. P. Hayes discovered that on two shots on one hole, he had unwittingly used a prototype golf ball not approved for competition. No one would have known and a full-time spot on the tour was on the line, but J. P. turned himself in and was disqualified. In June of 2009, Paul Azinger disqualified himself for playing a nonconforming ball due to a label issue. The ball had become nonconforming only a few days before. Television viewers have been responsible for disqualifications. In 1987 at San Diego, Craig Stadler had a shot land against a tree trunk on muddy ground. In order to take the shot, Stadler needed to get down on his knees. He laid a towel on the ground and kneeled on it. That constituted a breach of USGA Rule 13:3, which prohibits a player from "building a stance." A fan reported the violation from his home, and Craig learned after signing his scorecard that he had not finished second. It cost him $ 37, 000. In 1991, another TV watcher turned in Azinger for moving a loose impediment while in a water hazard at Doral. That was Rule 13-4 (c), and only a slight variation on Dustin Johnson's recent mistake which cost him a place in the PGA tournament playoff. Johnson twice tapped the earth in a beaten-down scrub brush on the 18th hole, breaking the rule which states, "The player must not touch the ground in the hazard." Lady professionals are not immune to alert watchers of the tube. A week ago last Saturday, a fan watching an LPGA event in Oregon e-mailed tournament officals that Juli Inkster had committed a violation. [caption id="attachment_8209" align="alignnone" width="200" caption="Juli Inkster"][/caption] The 50-year-old Hall of Famer was disqualified for using a weighted device to warm up while waiting at the 10th tee. Rule 14.3 bars the use of practice devices during rounds, specifically weighted "doughnuts." Inkster was three strokes behind as she made a bid to become the oldest golfer to win an LPGA tournament. Veteran PGA tour professional Tom Kite once commented about self-imposed disqualifications. "I don't think you'll see that in other sports. People set those standards long before us, and it's expected of us. And we expect it from the younger players."

College Football Predictions

College Football Predictions

It's here ! College football season begins this week with most teams opening their schedules on Saturday. Who are the teams to beat in the race for the national championship? There are two facts to keep in mind before we preview the experts' choices. 1. In the last decade, four teams played in the National Championship Game which had lost four or more games the previous season. Three of those schools lost five. 2. Only 10 of the 60 previous Associated Press preseason number 1 teams won the national title. Just two schools------Florida State in 1999 and USC in 2004------have held the top spot for the entire season. It's hard to believe, but the last time Alabama was first on the AP preseason poll was 1978 when Bear Bryant was coaching. The Tide can become the first school to win consecutive AP titles three times. Oklahoma and Nebraska also have accomplished it twice. The Southeastern Conference has six teams and the Atlantic Coast Conference five in the AP preseason rankings of the top 25 schools. USC is rated number 14 by The Associated Press, the first time outside the Top 10 since 2002.

Duchossois/McAnally

Duchossois/McAnally

One of the most heart-warming stories in thoroughbred racing this year occurred a week ago Saturday in Chicago. [caption id="attachment_8194" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Dick Duchossois"][/caption] 89-year-old Dick Duchossois is the chairman of Arlington Park, and one of the Grade 1 races at his racetrack is the $ 750, 000 Beverly D., named in honor of his first wife, Beverly, who died of cancer in 1980. Duchossois had tried to win the race for fillies and mares in 1991, 1992 and 2006 with horses he owned, but came up short every time. Last fall, Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally called Duchossois from France and told him he had seen a smart-looking filly that had only been in five races there, but had two firsts, a second and a third. McAnally said, "She's very feminine, very alert, has all the credentials, and everything about her is class." [caption id="attachment_8195" align="alignnone" width="125" caption="Ron McAnally"][/caption] Duchossois gave Ron the green light to buy Eclair de Lune which he did for $ 365, 000 at the Arqana Arc Sale at Longchamp. In the 21st running of the Beverly D. on August 21, jockey Junior Alvarado had Eclair de Lune running second with less than an eighth-mile remaining in the 1 3/16-mile grass race. Then, she took command and won by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:56.56 on good turf. As the fourth choice in a field of nine, the 4-year-old German-bred filly based in California paid $ 14.80 to win. Dick had tears in his eyes as he made his way through the stands to the winner's circle as fans gave him a standing ovation. How much did the victory mean to him? Duchossois put it this way, "I'd rather win this race than the Kentucky Derby." McAnally was equally jubilant, and remarked, "I'd rather have won this race than another Arlington Million" which he did with the legendary John Henry, the only two-time victor in the 28-year history of the Million. "We looked for many years, trying to find a horse to win this race. This is a great thrill because I wanted so much for Dick to win this special race.

Baseball Review

Baseball Review

Won't it be ironic, if in his final at bat with the Dodgers, Manny Ramirez was ejected by an umpire after one pitch as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded? Will Ramirez go to the White Sox before the Tuesday deadline to make him eligible for the playoffs if Chicago qualifies? In Denver on Sunday, the Rockies were ahead 8-2 in the sixth inning when the Dodgers put three men on base with one out. Ramirez came off the bench to hit. He and Alex Rodriguez each have 21 career grandslams, two behind record-holder Lou Gehrig. Plate umpire Gary Cederstrom called the first pitch a strike, Manny complained, and was kicked out of the game. Reed Johnson then replaced Ramirez and grounded into a double play. [caption id="attachment_8185" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Manny Ramirez"][/caption] Ramirez had a sensational start in Los Angeles after coming from Boston in July 2008. He hit .396 for the Dodgers, helped them advance to the National League Championship Series, and was rewarded with a two-year, $ 45 million contract. But, injuries and a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy cut into his playing time in 2009, and he never returned to his previous form as more injuries plagued Manny this season. ********************* On Tuesday night, the Dodgers found out why it's not good to be in fourth place with less than six weeks remaining in the season. They won in Milwaukee, but first place San Diego shutout Arizona, second place San Francisco mauled Cincinnati, and third place Colorado defeated Atlanta. No advancement in the division or wild card race, and one more day taken off the schedule. The Dodgers stayed 12 games off the top and 6 1/2 games behind in the wild card race with four clubs ahead of them. By late Sunday afternoon, the wild card deficit was still 6 1/2 and the Padres had them by 10 games. ************************

John Wooden

John Wooden

It's always been my belief that outstanding athletes can usually excel in several sports, not just the one they are known for by the fans. John Wooden is another example. We know he's in the College Basketball Hall of Fame for two different reasons. Yes, as a coach who won 10 national championships at UCLA within a 12-year span, including seven in a row between 1967 and 1973. But, don't forget he earned admission as a player too, being a standout at Purdue. Wooden died June 4 at the age of 99. Now, his daughter, Nan Muehlhausen, has found a golf scorecard in his condo that confirms what she had always heard her father say happened. The date was June 26, 1939. The site was the Erskine Park Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana. John was then the 28-year-old coach at Central High in South Bend and that day played 18 holes with two friends. [caption id="attachment_8157" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Nan Muehlhausen holding scorecard - Photo by David Crane/Los Angeles Daily News"][/caption] John Wooden made a hole-in-one and a double eagle that day. He carded his ace on the par 3, 149-yard sixth hole hitting a 5-iron. Then on the par 5, 505-yard 16th hole, the coach saw his second shot roll in the cup for a double eagle. That is the most difficult feat to accomplish in golf, tougher than a hole-in-one. No one knows how long John's second shot had to travel. Golf Digest says only four people have ever had an ace and a double eagle in the same round. Wooden shot a four-over par 75. He had a five-over par 40 on the front nine and a one -under par 35 on the back nine. Six people signed the scorecard. Congratulations to Jill Painter of the Los Angeles Daily News for this story.

Bobby Thomson

Bobby Thomson

Bobby Thomson died last Monday at the age of 86. Richard Goldstein of the New York Times, in the opening line of his obituary, said Thomson "swatted the most famous home run in baseball history" in 1951 to give the Giants a deciding playoff victory over the Dodgers and the National League pennant. Others have written it was the "most famous home run," but I have always disagreed. I maintain that Bill Mazeroski earned that distinction with his ninth inning homer in game 7 of the 1960 World Series. That allowed the Pirates to nip the Yankees, 10-9. and claim the world championship. It is the only walkoff home run in the seventh game of a World Series ever. All Thomson's homer did was win a pennant. The Giants lost to the Yankees in a six-game World Series. Maz's long ball off Ralph Terry determined baseball's champion for that season. ****************************** We have all had duffel bags. You might call it a gym bag or a kit bag. It's a large cylindrical bag made of cloth or other fabric with a drawstring closure at the top. Some people carry their sports equipment in these bags, especially if they are traveling in the outdoors.

Where did the name duffel originate?

Duffel, a town in Belgium, where the thick cloth used to make the bag originated.

Ryan Dempster

Ryan Dempster

If you are like me, you appreciate it when an athlete shows a little class. A tip of the cap to pitcher Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs for his gesture Friday at Wrigley Field. On Thursday, the Cubs traded first baseman Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves. A good deal for Lee and the Braves who can use another bat with Chipper Jones lost for the season. The Cubs aren't going anywhere. As fate would have it, the next afternoon the two teams opened a series against each other. In the first inning, Lee came to the plate for his first at-bat with his new team. On the mound ready to face him was his good friend Dempster. When Lee was introduced over the public address system, the Chicago fans gave him a standing ovation. Nice gesture. Derrek was a productive player with the Cubs. [caption id="attachment_8162" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Ryan Dempster"]Ryan Dempster[/caption] At this point, Dempster earned his Good Guy badge. Lee was acknowledging the Chicago fans by waving his batting helmet to the crowd. Ryan did not show any impatience, but instead stepped off the mound and let the cheers continue. He said later, "I was happy to hear the crowd give him the ovation he deserved. I thought I respected him a lot, and then you really realize the respect you have for a guy like that. He's going to a first place team with a great manager, and he's got a chance to go to the playoffs and win a World Series." So what happened when Derrek finally batted? Ryan got him to fly out on the first pitch. Lee went 0 for 4, and Dempster retired him three times. Atlanta got the last laugh, scoring three runs with two outs in the ninth to win, 5-3. Derrek Lee and Ryan Dempster are both Real Sports Heroes and their vignettes can be heard on this website.

Dennis Ralston

Dennis Ralston

"I want to help people who need a limb. There's so much an amputee can do. I want to encourage." ~ Dennis Ralston One of America's most prominent tennis personalities of the 1960's and 1970's is displaying an admirable positive attitude as he rebounds from the biggest blow of his 68-year-old life. Our friend, Dennis Ralston, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame since 1987, had his left leg amputated nine inches below the knee June 29 in Los Angeles, and will receive his customized prosthetic leg in the next ten days. Talking on the telephone with Denny last night as he relaxed at his home in Indio, California with his supportive wife, Linda, he spoke of his desire to continue teaching and coaching tennis "anywhere." He said, "I can move and get around." [caption id="attachment_8151" align="alignnone" width="220" caption="Dennis Ralston"][/caption] Ralston, who was the number 1 ranked men's tennis player in the U. S. for three consecutive years in the 1960s, won 27 national singles and doubles titles. A native of Bakersfield, California, and a star at USC where he won two NCAA singles and two NCAA doubles trophies, Denny was a five-time winner of Grand Slam doubles crowns. His first came when he was 17 as he missed his highschool graduation to team with Rafael Osuna and capture the 1960 Wimbledon title. He recalled for me having to win the opening match, 17-15 in the fifth set. Ralston paired with Chuck McKinley to win the U.S. National Doubles championships in 1961, 1963 and 1964. In 1966, he and Clark Graebner captured the French Open laurels, routing Ilie Nastase and Ion Tiriac in the final. Dennis was beaten in the 1966 Wimbledon singles final by Manuel Santana. He was rated as high as fifth in the world in singles at one time, and had one of the best forehand volleys in tennis. Ralston played on our Davis Cup teams from 1960 to 1966, then served as the coach between 1968 and 1972, before taking over as the captain between 1972 and 1975. He later coached several star players, including Chris Evert, and was the SMU tennis coach for over a decade. [caption id="attachment_8153" align="alignnone" width="196" caption="Dennis Ralston"][/caption] When we came to California 44 years ago, the Ralstons were our neighbors. One day, our dog was hit by a car while I was at work, and Denny rushed him to the veterinarian, probably saving his life. This has been a tough year for the tennis great. There was the January 14 operation on his left leg, and after a severe staphylococcus infection, two more surgeries before the amputation. Denny does not have diabetes and it was not poor blood circulation in his case. He says his problems occurred when multiple staph infections spread, causing osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is an acute or chronic bone or bone marrow infection. The infection may also spread to a bone from infected skin, muscles, or tendons next to the bone as it may appear under a chronic sore. It can also start in another part of the body and spread to the bone through the blood. Surgery may be needed to remove dead bone tissue if the infection does not go away. Ralston has begun light workouts and is swimming. He'll have a "trial" leg for six to nine months, will walk at different speeds, and then be given a "permanent" leg for three years. His biggest challenge will be keeping his balance. Denny is already looking ahead. He will attend a tennis clinic in Ashland, Oregon in late September, then go to Austin, Texas in October for an event he couldn't make last year. It's a tournament for amputees, and his friend, Fernando Velasco, the host pro, says Ralston's inspiring appearance will "have a lot more meaning and credibility" considering what has happened in the last two months. Ralston reports he has gotten a "great deal of support" from Linda's friend, Donna Pace, in the Palm Springs area. Donna is a double amputee She has told Denny, "I don't allow myself to think negatively." Dennis Ralston is a man of faith whose loving wife is by his side. It will be "Game, Set, Match" for him. *************************** Baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle and 16-year major league pitcher Rick Rhoden both suffered with osteomyelitis. As a youngster, Mantle was kicked in the shin during a football game, and his leg soon became infected with osteomyelitis. A midnight drive from his home in Commerce, Oklahoma to Tulsa enabled Mickey to be treated with newly available penicillin, saving his leg from amputation. But, he suffered from the effects of osteomyelitis the rest of his life, leading to many other injuries which prevented the Yankee superstar from setting numerous records in baseball history. Rhoden grew up in Boynton Beach, Florida, and when he was nine, slid down a slide in his backyard. Lodged in the grass was a pair of scissors with the sharp edges up, and Rick suffered a severe gash in one leg. That led to osteomyelitis, and he wore a brace until he was 12. Rhoden went on to win 151 games in the major leagues, and after retiring, became a pro golfer. He has earned the most money ever on the Celebrity Golf Tour, and won the prestigious event at Lake Tahoe to determine the best celebrity golfer eight times. Osteomyelitis affects two out of every 10, 000 people.

Boxing

A reliable source tells me it's 50-50 that welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will ever fight Floyd Mayweather, jr. There is speculation that it could be a $200 million fight----with each boxer receiving $ 50 million. [caption id="attachment_8107" align="alignnone" width="192" caption="Floyd Mayweather"][/caption] Some say Mayweather doesn't want to risk losing his unbeaten record. Boxing promoter Don King reportedly is trying to lure Mayweather away from Oscar DeLaHoya's Golden Boy Promotions, and would then work with rival Bob Arum to attempt to set up the fight. [caption id="attachment_8108" align="alignnone" width="205" caption="Manny Pacquiao"][/caption] Pacquiao has returned to first place in Yahoo ! Sports' pound-for-pound boxing ratings. The Filipino standout collected 21 first place votes and 345 total points, dropping Mayweather into second place. Floyd drew 15 firsts and 330 points. The feeling that Mayweather is refusing to negotiate for a November bout with Manny is believed to have cost him the top spot. Voters rank the 10 best boxers in the world, regardless of weight division.

Lisa’s Booby Trap

Lisa’s Booby Trap

If you like a Cinderella story and you are a lover of thoroughbred horses, then this tale may be one you will really enjoy. Meet Lisa's Booby Trap, a 3-year-old filly who is blind in her left eye, has a bad leg, and used to refuse to switch leads, a must for race horses as they negotiate turns. Oh, yes, she is also undefeated in four races on New York tracks. Owner-trainer Tim Snyder had made most of his living galloping horses and doing tasks for other trainers. In 2003, he lost his wife of 12 years, Lisa, to ovarian cancer. Before she died, Snyder's wife told him she hoped to be reincarnated as a horse. In the winter of 2009, Tim was in Florida training a few horses. A friend who owed him a favor offered to sell him this filly for $ 4,500. Snyder had only $2,000 which he carried in his boot, but agreed to pay the rest later, if she ever won. The horse had a flat right front foot and a club foot on the left front so she had a lopsided gate. When the filly tried to switch leads, she would hit her ankle. Snyder made some adjustments, including switching a back shoe to the front to even out her gate, and saw positive results. Tim named the horse after his wife and a Florida club. Lisa's Booby Trap made her racing debut on May 4 this year at Finger Lakes racetrack in New York and won by almost 18 lengths. After the race, a prominent trainer offered Tim $150,000, but he was not interested. The winning margin in the second race was 10 1/2 lengths, and Snyder was given a $ 500,000 offer which he declined. The winning margin was 8 1/2 lengths in the third race. Jockey Elaine Castillo was aboard in all three. [caption id="attachment_8100" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Jockey Kent Desormeaux and owner Tim Snyder"][/caption] Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux was given the ride when Lisa's Booby Trap made her debut at Saratoga on August 6, bringing her from last place down the backstretch in the field of five. She won by six lengths, earned a $ 42,000 purse, and has raised her total earnings to just over $75,000 for four races. What's next? Snyder is considering a race on the Travers undercard on August 28.

Minor League Baseball

Minor League Baseball

Less than 1 percent of all youngsters who play baseball will become major league players. A minor leaguer's chance of making a big league team's 25-man roster is 9 percent. [caption id="attachment_8094" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Minor League Baseball Stadium"][/caption] Lin and I made our yearly 140-mile round-trip to see a minor league baseball game on Saturday night. Eight of our friends joined us for an advanced Class A league battle. It's become an annual summer ritual for the group. A nice ballpark, $4 parking, $12 a seat for tickets two rows behind the dugout, typical stadium food, and comfortable weather. The players are unknown 18 to 24 year-olds chasing their dream of reaching the big leagues one day. Few will make it. The nightly crowd will range from 1,000 to 2,000 fans. The music on the PA system stopped only for pitches. There were only two umpires, and one had to put up with the home team mascot's act of clinging to him between half innings at one point. The ump was a good sport and somehow never lost track of the number of warmup pitches the hurler was throwing. When the pitcher had tossed seven, the umpire held up one finger. Great concentration. Almost every half inning, there was some kind of contest on the field as the teams hurried to and from their dugouts. Young fans were the contestants. A good public relations move designed to make the kids want to come back and bring their parents again. Every dollar helps when you are operating a minor league franchise. After this game, there was a five-minute fireworks show. Bet that cost at least 15-thousand dollars. When I was a youngster, there were 57 minor leagues in baseball, but then television arrived and baseball fans began to stay home more and more nights. Today, there are just 19 minor leagues and two are summer leagues in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. There are 244 minor league teams, and here is the breakdown: 3 TRIPLE A Leagues..........Pacific Coast (16 teams), International (14 teams), and Mexican (16 teams)= 46 teams. 3 DOUBLE A Leagues.......Eastern (12 teams), Southern (10 teams), and Texas (8 teams)= 30 teams. 3 ADVANCED A Leagues.....California (10 teams), Carolina (8 teams), and Florida State(12 teams)= 30 teams. 2 A Leagues.......................Midwest (16 teams) and South Atlantic (14 teams)=30 teams. 2 Short Season A Leagues.......New York-Pennsylvania (14 teams) and Northwest (8 teams)=22 teams 6 Rookie Leagues..............Appalachian (10 teams), Arizona Summer (12 teams), Pioneer (8 teams), Gulf Coast (15 teams), Dominican Summer (34 teams), and Venezuelan Summer ( 7 teams)= 86 teams. [caption id="attachment_8095" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Roger Dean Stadium"][/caption] What do minor league players earn during a season? It depends on whether a player is called to the majors at any time that year. Basically, here is the pay scale per league. TRIPLE A $2,150 a month or a maximum of $32,500 for the season if you are a player with major league experience DOUBLE A $1500 a month A (Full Season) $1,050 a month A (Short Season) $850 a month Dominican and Venezuela $300 a month Meal Money $20 per day on the road The average length of a major league baseball player's career is 5.6 years. After seven years in the minors, a player can become a free agent. You have to love the game and endure the bus rides to play minor league baseball. Thanks, guys, for your effort.

Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball

If you were hoping for a Freeway Series in October, I've got bad news for you. It doesn't look like it will happen----in 2010. With seven weeks to go in the regular season after Sunday, the Angels had a record of 60 and 59 while the Dodgers were 60 and 58. Very unimpressive. The Dodgers were 11 games behind first place San Diego in the loss column and the Angels were 10 back of Texas in the same column. In the wild card race, the Halos were 13 down in the loss column while the Blue Crew was six, but there are three teams ahead of the Dodgers.

FEAST OR FAMINE.........

On Tuesday night, the Dodgers scored 15 runs in Philadelphia. On Wednesday evening, the Dodgers did not score against the Phillies. Thursday night turned into a disaster for the Dodgers. The similarity of that game compared with another between the same two teams almost 20 years to the night before would have eluded me had not been for my sharp son-in-law in Dallas, Brook. While reviewing the details for him on the phone on Friday, the 13th, of the previous evening's finish in Philadelphia, he reminded me of the other game which I had forgotten. Neither one of us was sure of the date until I did some research. August 21, 1990 The Dodgers led the Phillies, 11-1 after seven innings and 11-3 after eight innings in Los Angeles. Philadelphia scored nine runs in the ninth to win, 12-11. August 12, 2010 The Dodgers were ahead of the Phils, 9-2 after seven innings. Host Philadelphia rallied with four runs in the eighth and four more with no one out in the ninth to win, 10-9. In studying the box score of the 1990 game, the Dodgers had erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning to take the 10-run lead. Mike Hartley allowed Philly only two hits in his six innings on the mound. There was only one homer in the 23 run production, and that was a pinch three-run shot by John Kruk in the ninth inning off loser Tim Crews. Crews later died in a boat accident and the Dodgers' third baseman that night, Mike Sharperson, lost his life in a car wreck. Mike Scioscia drove in four runs for the Dodgers and had three hits. Von Hayes also had three RBI for the Phillies. There were seven errors, four by the Dodgers, including two each by Scioscia and shortstop Jose Offerman, making five of the Philadelphia runs unearned. Roger McDowell got the win. Author Fred Schwed, Jr. wrote in his 1957 book, How to Watch a Baseball Game, "The baseball box score is the pithiest form of written communication in America today, It is abbreviated history. It is two or three hours (the box score even gives THAT item to the minute) of complex activity, virtually inscribed on the head of a pin, yet no knowing reader suffers from eyestrain." Stanley Cohen, who wrote The Man in the Crowd in 1981, said this, "The box score is the catechism of baseball, ready to surrender its truth to the knowing eye." A telling note about the Dodgers........they have either been shutout or limited to one run in 29 games this season. (After August 15)

BASEBALL BRIEFS......

The Phillies were shutout for the fourth straight time by the Mets in New York on Friday night. The first three were in May. So what happens Saturday? Philadelphia returned the favor, blanking the Mets. R. A. Dickey's one-hitter Friday against the Phils was the 35th one-hitter in Mets history. They have never had a no-hitter. The only hit was a clean single by pitcher Cole Hamels in the sixth inning. It was the fourth time since 1990 a pitcher got the only hit for his major league team. San Diego also has never had a pitcher turn in a no-hitter. How is this for frustration? The Mets went 50 days ( June 23-August 12) with no more than a ONE-game winning streak. [caption id="attachment_8089" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Carl Pavano"][/caption] One of the biggest surprises of this baseball season has been pitcher Carl Pavano of the Minnesota Twins. In 2004, Pavano chalked up 18 wins for the Florida Marlins, but in the five seasons which followed, the right-hander was constantly injured and notched only 23 victories. Pavano irritated the Yankees by his failure to pitch and they dumped him. But, the Twins gave Carl a $ 7 million contract for this year only, and he has registered 15 wins, dueling C. C. Sabathia and David Price for the American League lead in wins.

Golf

Golf

Were you aware that 12 non-Americans have won the last 17 professional golf tour events? Those are the facts now that 25-year-old Martin Kaymer (KY-mer) of Germany captured the PGA championship Sunday in a three-hole playoff with Bubba Watson after another U. S. player, Dustin Johnson, was penalized for grounding a club on the last hole, costing him a spot in the playoff. For more on rule violations in golf, listen to Gary Player # 2 on this website. [caption id="attachment_8080" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Martin Kaymer (Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images)"][/caption] It was Kaymer's first major tournament victory, but he has five triumphs on the European tour. Only one U. S. golfer recorded a win in the four major events this year, and that was "Lefty" Mickelson at Augusta.

Major Tournament Winners----2010

MASTERS Phil Mickelson, U. S.
U. S. OPEN Graeme McDowell, Northern Ireland
BRITISH OPEN Louis Oosthuizen, South Africa
PGA Martin Kaymer, England

My friend, Art Spander, a well-respected San Francisco sports columnist for years, was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the PGA of America. Here are excerpts of a column he wrote in July [caption id="attachment_8079" align="alignnone" width="116" caption="Art Spander"][/caption]

Suddenly, Americans Can't Play Golf By Art Spander

It is an accepted premise the United States, until proven differently, isn't going to be a winner in soccer. From a parochial view, tennis is rather hopeless, other than Ms. Serena. Now we can't play golf, at least as well as the rest of the world. Maybe provincialism is an outdated philosophy anyway. Borders are easily crossed. Maria Sharapova resides in Florida. So does Ernie Els. Ian Poulter, an Englishman who also spends much of the year in Florida, is sponsored by Mutual of Omaha, and it's hard to get much more American than that. Still, there is that event called the Ryder Cup, the biennial competition between Europe and the U. S., this year scheduled in October in Wales, and the results figure to be deflating for America. Even if the U. S. has the Nos. 1 and 2 players in the world rankings, Tiger Woods and Mickelson, a placement order which is not going to last very long. Mickleson is about to be overtaken by Englishman Lee Westwood, and Steve Stricker came in 55th at the British Open, unimpressive for the No. 5 player in the world. In every sport there's both nationalism and pride, as well as a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Does this have something to do with the American psyche? And determination? Or lack of same? Would our kids rather play computer games than real ones? Is it too much to expect in an affluent country that young people would sacrifice time hitting serves or 3-irons or even, looking at the influx of Caribbean athletes in baseball, hitting curveballs? Westwood took a poke, good-natured that it might have been, at the decline of American players last month. He congratulated PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem on Stricker's win at the John Deere Classic when he said, " Lovely to see an American win on your tour." Andrew (Chubby) Chandler is the agent of several top European players and predicted before the PGA championship that European players would win five of the next eight majors. In his words, "If you look at the players, they are just very, very good at the moment. And the European Tour is a strong place to play. I can sense what happened in the ' 80s----when Ballesteros, Faldo, Langer, Lyle and Woosnam dominated the rankings---is going to happen now." Woods' failings have removed the anchor which used to exist. He might not have won everything, but he won enough to give the PGA Tour the cachet which now has been stripped. Golf, as many sports, is cyclical. But it will be a long while until this cycle of non-American success in golf is broken.
